The purpose of the Regional Veterans Council is to advise the UAW National Veterans Affairs Department as to the concerns and issues affecting UAW veterans. In addition, our responsibilities and directions are to provide and assist the local union Veterans Standing Committees, and our members, in possibilities and realities to enhance the way of life for all veterans in times of need, and to keep the regional director informed of any ongoing and future activities in which we can be of assistance.
We also have a National Veterans Advisory Board which consists of one member appointed by each Regional Director.
In regards to local unions, Article 44 of the UAW Constitution states:
“The Local Union shall have the following committees: Constitution and Bylaws, Union Label, Education, Conservation and Recreation, Community Services, Civil Rights, Citizenship and Legislative, Consumer Affairs, Veterans, a Local Union’s Women’s Committee, where such membership exists, and such other committees as they deem necessary. All committees should be appointed or elected, subject to the discretion of the Local Union or Unit Workplace Organization in the case of the Amalgamated Local Union.”
Therefore, each local union is to have a Veteran’s Standing Committee, which also participates in discussions to help those in need and follows the guidelines set in accordance with the UAW Constitution. These Standing Committees are populated with union members in good standing who are also veterans.
The Regional Council is comprised of delegate from these local union Standing Committees from each local within Region 1A, as appointed by the Local Union President. UAW Region 1A’s Veterans Council meetings are usually every third Wednesday of the month at 5:00pm. The location varies each month and is determined by the local unions who volunteer the usage of their local union halls. At these meetings, new business, old business, and good and welfare is discussed, along with reports of the activities that volunteers are performing and what is needed to help our veterans.
UAW Region 1A Director,
Rory L. Gamble is firmly committed in supporting our veterans- from legislation for veteran’s affairs to fundraisers for the needy.
